What is CalFresh?
- CalFresh is a supplemental nutrition assistance program, that provides monthly benefits to assist low-income individuals and families purchase the food they need to maintain adequate nutrition. Benefits are distributed via an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, like a debit card, and can be used at most grocery stores and farmers’ markets. CalFresh benefits can also be used to purchase seeds and plant starts for household use.
Who is Eligible for CalFresh?
- All U.S. Citizens, Lawful permanent residents, refugees/asylees, T/U visa holders, and those admitted for humanitarian reasons (Qualified citizens) may qualify to receive CalFresh benefits. Children may qualify to receive CalFresh benefits, regardless of where the parents were born. Individuals with no children may also qualify. Eligibility for CalFresh assistance is based on the household size, gross monthly income, and who is cooking and preparing meals together.
How to Qualify for CalFresh
- The amount of benefits a household receives is dependent on family size, countable income, and monthly expenses such as housing, utilities, childcare. Due to COVID19, there is a temporary 15% increase in benefits through September 2021. The monthly income limits can be found in English here and in Spanish here.
